This is a picture of Louis Lassen, one of my favourite American heroes. As with many great men, the role he played in history has been told more than one way, but all agree that a crucial element of modern life would be lacking without his genius and influence. His family enterprise still carries on his noble work, making the sacrifice of whatever their own personal goals must have been for the greater good. The Lassen family continues to keep Louis' legacy alive: a hamburger joint in a magical place called New Haven, Connecticut. They have a website where they showcase their hard work (and from where I borrowed the photograph of Louis):
My favourite version of the story is the one with the sailors from Hamburg, Germany. They came in the shop and asked for a certain kind of meat sandwich; by their description, and with no small amount of culinary mastery, Louis was able to throw together a delicious combination of meat, bun, onion, tomato and cheese that the world so avidly embraced as the hamburger.
Other (possibly more official) versions say the hamburger was born out of a hurried lunch that Louis threw together for a hurried customer. Boring~! I'll take sailors from Germany any day!
Hamburger, I love you!
